House of Quality

The main parts of the HOQ are identified on the following picture:

Main parts of the HOQ

  1. CORE area is used for comparing customer requirements (left column) and product characteristics (top row). The data is compared entering a value from the relationship scale in cells that represent the intersection between requirements and product characteristics. The last row of the Core area is the importance rank row.

  2. ROOF area is used to determine the correlation between two product characteristics (data in the top row). Correlations can range from strong negative to strong positive. If the compared values go up together, the correlation is positive, and vice versa.

  3. EVALUATION areas are used for ranking your company vs. the competition. Evaluations can be competitive (regarding customer requirements) or technical (regarding product characteristics).
