How Many Levels?

Designs are typically broken up into two-level, three-level, and mixed-level designs. The number of levels indicates the number of unique values for each input. For example, a two-level design would experiment at -1 and +1, while a three-level design would experiment at -1, 0, and +1. Typically, all of the factors would be at the same number of levels. For example, you might have 5 inputs which are all at 2 levels. However, in some cases you might want a portion of the inputs at 2 levels and the rest at 3 levels. Example: 5 Total Inputs, One at 2 levels and four at 3 levels.

Two-Level Designs – These designs are suitable for models where there is no (or very little) curvature. They are typically much smaller than their three-level counterparts.

Three-Level Designs – These designs are typically larger but allow you to model curvature. Models with three levels will typically produce a quadratic (e.g., A^2^, B^2^, …).

Select Number of Factors:

Use the drop down box to indicate how many factors you would like to experiment with. The number of factors should not include the constant or the interactions.

Factors are also known as inputs, independent variables, and main effects.

Choose a Design

Quantum XL will provide options for designs that are available based upon the number of levels and inputs. One or more of the designs may be recommended and will be indicated as such in red.

Designs can be broken up into two main categories: Screening and Modeling. If a design is a screening design, it is designated as such in parenthesis. For example "Taguchi L12 (Screening Design, no Interactions)".

Do you want to randomize runs?

Quantum XL will randomize the runs automatically. If you check the box "Use this setting always" your choice will be remembered in future Design Wizard sessions.

Enter number of replicates and blocks

Select number of replicates: Choose how many times you would like the design to be replicated. With more replicates comes additional cost; however, you also have more statistical power. Some designs, such as full factorial and Taguchi designs, provide a "Help Me Choose" button to calculate the number of replicates for the desired power.

Number of Center Points per block: Use the dropdown box to select the number of center points. Center points can be added to two-level factorial designs.

Note

This option is only available in some designs.

Select number of blocks: Quantum XL supports blocking via aliasing or within the replicates. All of the options will be displayed in the drop down box.

Fold Design: Choose your folding option from the drop down box.
